OLD HABITS DIE HARD
For tens of thousands of years folk have gone out into the Midwinter woods to honour the wild energies of natural life. The following true story is a wonderful illustration of how the memory of ancient sacred activity remains buried deep within our psyche – our very genetic coding – and even if people have absolutely no idea why, they will still find themselves drawn to certain activities which they cannot explain but feel a compulsion to enter into.
Some years ago, my son was out walking with his dog a few days before Christmas. He had taken a less frequented path which he rarely used and was enjoying the frosty sunshine when he rounded a curve in the path and could hardly believe his eyes… indeed, to begin with he doubted his sanity! For there beside the path was a small oak tree which had gaily coloured baubles and tinsel hanging from it. Unusually for him, he had gone out without his phone and dashed back home to get it so that he could take a photo of the tree because otherwise, he reasoned, no one would ever believe him.
Just as he returned to the tree, a woman was approaching from another direction carrying more decorations, which she proceeded to add to those already hanging there. My son took his photo and asked the woman why she had done it. She replied that she had decorated a little tree somewhere in that wood for several years running and that it just seemed a nice thing to do. She added that, despite it being a popular spot for dog walkers and youngsters, her seasonal decorations were never damaged or disturbed by people – little short of miraculous in this day and age – and just another example of deep-seated instinct enhancing respect for the sacred tree of the wild woods.
